The Grande Grotta is Kalymnos’ most iconic climbing sector and one of the world’s most famous limestone caves. Hanging high above Masouri, facing Telendos, it combines dramatic rock formations, massive tufas and stalactites, and long athletic routes that have shaped the history of modern sport climbing. Its cathedral-like atmosphere makes every ascent unforgettable.
The cave provides shade during the morning, making it ideal for warm-season climbing. Access is straightforward, requiring a 15–20 minute hike from Masouri or Armeos along a well-marked path. The terrain is steep but manageable for experienced climbers.
Grades range from 6b to 8c, with many endurance-focused climbs and overhanging lines. Legendary routes such as “Fun de Chichunne”, “Priapos”, “Gaia”, and “Aegialis” attract elite climbers year after year. Expect long sequences on tufas, kneebars, stalactite movement and powerful pulls.
Grande Grotta is the beating heart of Kalymnos climbing — visually stunning, physically demanding, and endlessly inspiring. It frequently serves as a highlight location during the Kalymnos Climbing Festival and remains a must-visit sector for every serious climber.
